Complete Streets Birmingham is an initiative led by a growing number of organizations and individuals who would like to create a complete streets network throughout Birmingham, Alabama. The initiative was started by the Health Action Partnership as way to improve health and quality of life in the Birmingham region by creating a healthier built environment.
Complete Streets is the idea of designing corridors (streets, sidewalks, landscape, lighting, etc.) for people instead of just cars. The idea is to help people move around the city easier and safer no matter what form of transportation they use.
The Complete Streets approach has proven to be safer, improves the economy, helps to create equality, and improves the environment. This initiative is about moving the region's infrastructure to become safer, more environmentally friendly, more supportive for building healthy communities.
